Schechterly retires from coaching Girls basketball at JRHS

James River High School would like to wish Elwood “E.D” Schechterly well as he retires as the head coach of James River High School’s Girls basketball program. Coach Schechterly began as a James River athlete and has since devoted 26 years to coaching for James River High School.  Schechterly played basketball at James River High School, where he was named All-District and played on the VHSL All-Star team. Mr. Schechterly went on to play at Lynchburg College (now the University of Lynchburg), where he made All-Conference four years, was named Player of the Year for three years and was First Team All American. Schechterly still holds several records at Lynchburg, including rebounds and shots where he was second in the nation for Division III schools. After college, Schechterly played two years of professional basketball in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and was the leading scorer and rebounder in the league for both years. In 2005, Mr. Schechterly was inducted into the James River High School Athletics Hall of Fame.

Mr. Schechterly has coached JRHS softball since 1996 and later joined the JRHS basketball staff. Mr. Schechterly shared that when he began coaching at James River, he was the assistant coach for both boys’ basketball and girls’ basketball teams because the girls played in the fall and the boys played in the winter. Coach Schechterly became the girls’ basketball head coach in 2017. Coach Schechterly has enjoyed coaching great girls over the past years.

James River High School would like to thank Coach Schechterly for his dedication, service, mentorship, and loyalty to the JRHS basketball programs.  Good luck in the future, Coach E.D. Schechterly!
