“A Most Horrid Conspiracy” Brings Botetourt’s Revolutionary Story to Life for VA250

Botetourt County, VA — A bold new theatrical production, A Most Horrid Conspiracy, will debut May 28–31, 2026, shining a spotlight on a remarkable true story from the Revolutionary War—one rooted right here in Botetourt County.

Storyteller, barrel maker, and spy John Wyatt—armed with a quick wit and a barrel of rum—helped change the course of the war in Virginia. This original play, written by Botetourt playwright Dwayne Yancey, brings his story to life with drama, intrigue, and a strong sense of place.

Directed by Katerina Yancey, the production invites audiences into a lesser-known chapter of American history, blending humor, suspense, and historical authenticity.

A Most Horrid Conspiracy is presented as part of the VA250 commemoration, celebrating Virginia’s role in the Revolutionary War. The production is created in partnership with the Botetourt County Historical Society, Inc. and will benefit Historic Smithfield, helping preserve the region’s rich heritage.

Audiences can expect an engaging theatrical experience that connects local history to the broader story of America’s founding—proving that even a single act, or a single barrel, can alter the course of history.
