Bench dedicated in memory of McKenzie Beyers

McKenzie Byers Class of 2020 at Lord Botetourt High School, did not get to graduate as she passed away from injuries received when she was hit by a car. The months since have brought many things to heighten awareness and signify her caring nature. The ” Every corner is a crosswalk.” campaign in the Roanoke Valley, donations to organizations like The Roanoke Rescue Mission and now a bench at her beloved LBHS guidance office.

“Kenzie would come in here and sit during her lunch period,” said Guidance admin assistant, Shawnee Leonard.

The silver bench made by Twists and Turns and funded by family, friends and community members features two butterflies and a simple saying, “Come site by me.” Kenzie was in tuned to the needs of others and often reached out to a lonely student.

Her grandparents, Andy and Sandy Beyers brought a dedication ribbon. Two of her friends Aleigh Shafer and Michala Ballard came in support of the memorial bench. Principal Andy Dewease talked about the thoughtfulness of Kenzie and her family and friends.

Sandy Byers said of the bench, “This special tribute will continue Kenzie’s legacy to make all teens feel loved.”
