Photos: New Colonial School’s Groundbreaking

The new Colonial School’s Groundbreaking took place on the school site on Murray Drive just off Laymantown Road on Tuesday, August 20. A host of county and school officials, the Colonial teachers and a number of students with yellow and blue shovels were in attendance. The Murrays who once lived there showed up for a farewell and a well wish to the new school.

All remarks focused on what a great day it was for Botetourt County. Speakers included School Superintendent Dr. Lisa Chen, BOS Chairman Billy Martin, Tamy Riggs, Colonial princpal, Scott Swortzel School Board Rep for Blue Ridge and John Kilby of the EDA and a Colonial 5th grader Marly Mazurek. Supervisor Ray Sloan a Chaplain for BoCoEMS, offered up a blessing on the site.

The best thing ever? Colonial students wearing yellow hard hats using those blue and yellow Cougar shovels and turning the ground! As Riggs said, “It is their school!”

The new Colonial is expected to be finished within 16 months.
