August School Board meeting Highlighted Accomplishments

In the August meeting, the Botetourt County School Board honored some first team All State spring sports student athletes, and a State FAA championship Team in Ag Mechanics from LBHS.

On the first day of school, the school board and administrators toured all of the schools. “It was a great first day,” said Assistant Janet Womack .On August 15, there were 4,558 students and contained the largest Kindergarten class in 5 years with 340.

New choices on the school menus in the secondary level include pizza, smoothies, banana splits, and elementary kids are enjoying chicken and waffles, make your own pizza and Taco Tuesdays.

The first class of 9th grade Health and PE students at the YMCA and BCPS collaboration finished up the summer with credits in hand.

All of the Core Supervisors updated on The Journey to Greatness. Transportation and School Nutrition, Technology, Finance, Human Resources, Maintenance and facilities etc.

Some highlights include new menus, Chrome books distribution, possible partnerships with County administration, potential for solar power at JRHS and ERES, new evaluation forms for staff performance, and much more.

Jim Whitten described the building site at the new Colonial Elementary School. Ground breaking is Tuesday, August 20th at 3 p.m.

Citizens with children getting on the bus on US 460 want to change the bus route for safety reasons and spoke a few minutes to the board to relay their concerns.

Superintendent Lisa Chen said, “We will begin budget preparations earlier starting in October. we will be looking at capital improvements.” She noted she and Brandon Lee the school’s finance director are readying for the task.

Next school board meeting is Sept. 19
