Blue Star Memorial dedicated in Troutville Town Park

A giant American flag blew in the breeze against an azure sky. It dangled from the new ladder truck of the Troutville Volunteer Fire Dept.  Below in the park, the Blue Star Memorial dedication took place on Veterans Day at 2 pm in Troutville’s Town Park. A nationwide program started by the garden clubs of America after WWII to honor service men and women, the Blue Star Memorials are featured along roadsides and parks through out the United States. Thanks to the efforts of the Fincastle Garden Club and Big Spring Garden Club, The  Town of Troutville, The Sunshine Girls and others, the dream has been realized.  Troutville is home to a Blue Star Memorial.

Well over 100 people from children to those in their 90s were on hand. Del. Terry Austin, Supervisor Mac Scothorn, members from the state garden club and a representative from Sen. Mark Warner’s office were on hand. The Sheriff’s Dept. Color guard presented the colors. Several soloists presented patriotic music including Sheila Delp, Laura Baumgarner and Rev. Robert J. McRae. Dean Paderick offered up scripture lessons for those who have been military. Louis Silcox representing the VFW laid a wreath at the memorial. Various members of the Garden clubs in Botetourt offered information about the event. Fincastle Garden Club president Shirley Mullins acted as MC for the event. Silcox, A Korean War veteran said, ” This and the previous event at the elementary school mean the world to me and other Veterans.”

Mayor Horton said, “On behalf of the Town of Troutville we accept the memorial and thank all of our veterans for their service.”

Afterward, warm drinks and snacks were provided in the large picnic pavilion at the park.

Mullins is collecting money for memorial brick Pavers for the Blue Star Memorial. Funds received will help maintain the  memorial area. Each paver is $50 and information comes from Mullins at 992-1339 or Lee Minnix 819-6335.
