Scholarships announced by Mountain Castles Soil and Water Conservation District


Leah Germain of Lord Botetourt High School has been awarded the $1,000 John and Hallie Seibel Memorial Scholarship from Mountain Castles Soil and Water Conservation District. Germain’s science fair project on the presence of microplastics and nanoplastics in local waters won third place at the Roanoke Valley Governor’s School science fair. Her project also received the American Meteorological Society Award and the Western Virginia Water Authority Award at the regional science fair. Germain will attend the University of Virginia to pursue a degree in environmental.

Brian Howard of James River High School has been awarded the $1,000 Harold P. Entsminger Honorary Scholarship by Mountain Castles Soil and Water Conservation District. Howard has been active in many organizations including FFA, 4-H, SCA, Botetourt Longbeards, and National Honor Society. Howard will attend Virginia Western Community to pursue a degree in agriculture.
