Botetourt prepares to make big changes to Courthouse Square in Fincastle

On October 9, 2020, the first meeting between interested partners, including the architectural firm of Architectural Partners of Lynchburg, county officials, the mayor of Fincastle, the Circuit Court Clerk, the County Registrar and two supervisors, took place.

According to Amsterdam District Supervisor Steve Clinton, discussion indicates that most want to see the courthouse structure retain its over Greek Revival style of the existing courthouse.
The project includes renovating the existing courthouse structure along with surrounding buildings to, “bring all facilities into compliance with current standards for justice facilities; improve security, adjacencies, and interior traffic flow; expand floor space and provide for future expansion; upgrade aesthetics; replace HVAC; improve parking; etc.,” Clinton wrote in an email.
The facilities will house the Circuit Court, the Commonwealth’s Attorney, the Voter Registrar, the Clerk of the Circuit Court’s Office, and related functions. “The solution will probably be a renovated and enlarged courts facility, with perhaps a few “new” ancillary buildings, but NOT a “new courthouse,” Clinton emphasized.

Additionally, the Town of Fincastle’s desire for commercial opportunities in the area surrounding the courthouse square are also being taken into consideration, Clinton said.
The current courthouse was built in the 1970s following a devastating fire. The exterior of the structure is allegedly based upon drawings created by President Thomas Jefferson.  As the building has aged, it has developed leaks and mold issues. Additionally, the facilities are no longer appropriate for security reasons

Restoration and renovation of the historically significant structure has been a topic at Board of Supervisor meetings for some time

The project is in its early stages and could change. The initial report should go before the Board of Supervisors at the March 2021 meeting.
