Northern Fables book is released by Rhonda McDonald and illustrated by Holly Clary

In the year 2000, Rhonda McDonald started a book on northern fables. It sat on the shelf until 2018. In 2019 with the assistance of Holly Clary, Art teacher at Breckinridge Elementary School and Allen Mahon of SDC Publishing in Buchanan the book, Fables from the North has been released.

The books are author and artist signed and would be an excellent addition to an Easter basket or birthday gift. It includes fables like The North Star and the Aurora Borealis, The Polar Bear and the the Puffin, The Beavers and the River Otter and several more.

McDonald retired from Botetourt Public Schools as a reading teacher. She has published 12 children’s books. A visitor to Alaska several times and with a keen interest in Polar Bears, it is a natural subject for her. Mahon of SDC Publishing has helped her connect with artists to illustrate the most recent books. The publishing company is located in Buchanan. He can be reached at allenfmahon@gmail.com

This is the first storybook Clary has illustrated. She has a BA in Art and a Master’s of Arts. She is art teacher at Breckinridge, Eagle Rock and Buchanan Elementary schools. It took about 8 months to finish the illustrations and put the book together.

A fable is a story that teaches a lesson. The northern fables are much like character building stories and moral stories (as fables often are,) but with an animal and science twist ie the aurora. They are examples of interesting stories that can be used to teach and promote goodness and kindness and citizenship.
