LOA Soup for Seniors underway, Century 21 Wampler Realty in Daleville has a drop-off box

LOA Soup for Seniors Project continues in 19th annual drive

Winter is a difficult time for our older homebound neighbors and the choice between food and heat can be hard. Help make the decision easy by making sure their shelves are stocked with warming soups and other non-perishable food items, like peanut butter. Help end senior hunger by giving soup, crackers and other shelf stable food items to the LOA’s 19th annual “Soup for Seniors” collection in collaboration with AARP. Your contribution will make a huge difference in the lives of your homebound neighbors.

The drive will kick off at Black Dog salvage, 902 13th Street SW, where volunteers will be on hand to collect food donations.  The following weekend, LOA will be at Kroger Cave Spring Corner (3971 Brambleton Ave) on February 6 and 7 to accept more donations.  Lastly, volunteers will be assisting with the unloading of food February 8-9 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.  at the main collection site, the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, 4909 North Lake Drive, Roanoke.

This year’s goal is 30,000 cans of food items to be delivered to more than 2,500 local residents.  A hot bowl of soup on a cold day can go a long way in making sure no senior goes hungry. All the items collected will be put into reusable cloth bags provided by AARP and distributed into the homes of our elderly neighbors.  If you are a part of a civic group, church group or if you want to collect as a service project with your business, we will welcome any and all donations.

We are also in need of volunteers.  Volunteers play a vital role in this project and it cannot be done without their help. Please call to find out how you can help, including at our collection sites and at the church.  Volunteers are also need February 9-17 to help bag and deliver the soup and can sign up at:  https://signup.com/go/BFpSNNq

All this cannot be done without the support of a generous community.  We feel so fortunate to provide service in our region and look forward to continuing Soup for Seniors for many years to come.  More information about the project can be found at https://www.loaa.org/services/critical-assistance/soup-for-seniors/  or by calling the LOA in Roanoke at 540-345-0451 or 540-962-0465 in the Alleghany Highlands.
