Deegan endorsed for J&D Bench in Alleghany Highlands

Jill Deegan enjoys outdoor activities when not in court

The following endorsement for Gillian, (Jill) Deegan has been sent to members of the General Assembly including Del. Terry Austin of Buchanan. The endorsement is for Botetourt’s Chief Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Gillian Deegan for a Judgeship in Juvenile and Domestic Court mostly iserving in the Allegany Highlands. It also includes the occasional service in Botetourt Juvenile and Domestic in General District Court.

From John Alexander, Commonwealth’s Attorney,

As you know, I am the President of the Botetourt County Bar Association. It is my understanding that an appointment is to be made to fill the J & D bench to be vacated by the retirement of Judge Dascher. In that regard I ask you to consider appointing Gillian Deegan, Esq. to that position and to advise you that at our meeting on Thursday, November 5th, 2020, the membership of the Botetourt Bar Association voted to endorse Ms. Deegan for the position of J & D Judge.

Jill is currently the Chief Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney for Botetourt County, carrying a full caseload of trial work and handling scheduling, training and supervisory roles as well. She is frequently in all courts, including J & D and also spends time training prosecutors and law enforcement officers all over the country. Jill consistently carries out these duties professionally and to the highest ethical standards with justice and fairness always as the first and highest goals.

Prior to being a prosecutor Jill had a range of experiences. She was a soldier in the U.S. Army Reserve, served as a Law Enforcement Officer and a Probation Officer and received her law degree and admission to the Virginia Bar in 1999. Jill then spent several years in private practice working as a criminal defense attorney, family law attorney and as a Guardian Ad Litem representing the best interests of children in the juvenile courts.

Jill is also an active member of our community, volunteering with many organizations including the Virginia Bloodhound Search and Rescue Association, Angels of Assisi animal rescue and care organization and New Freedom Farm, serving veterans of the armed forces.  Given her background and qualifications, I hope you will agree with the collective judgment of our Bar Association that Gillian Deegan is an excellent candidate for Judge of the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court and ask that you support her for that position.

Very truly yours,

John R. H. Alexander,

                                                                        President, Botetourt County Bar Association
