Monuments and Memorial committee to examine three topics

Botetourt County Monument and Memorials Committee has met once and “endorsed the idea of approaching [the Confederate Monument] with tangible knowledge,” Amsterdam Supervisor Steve Clinton  said.

He made his comments at the September 22 meeting of the Board of Supervisors.

His committee has split into three parts, he told the Board. One group will examine Botetourt County’s general history with regards to the War Between the States, while another will review the county’s education system during the reconstruction period. A third committee will review veterans of the war and the descendants of enslaved persons.

Because of the vast scope of information, Clinton said the committee will hold virtual meetings, including on September 24 at 4:30 p.m. Information about the meeting and how residents may view it should be available on the county’s website.

Clinton said the committee should have a recommendation to the Board in January 2021.
