Monuments and Memorials committee formed

The Botetourt County Citizens Committee on Monuments and Memorials has been formed, the Board of Supervisors learned at its August 25, 2020 meeting.

Amsterdam District Supervisor Steve Clinton last month was tasked with establishing a committee to review the Confederate monument at the Botetourt County Courthouse. The request came about because of vandalism to the structure in June as well as changes mores of society.

Clinton said he had asked 11 interested organizations to appoint a person to represent the organization to form a committee.

Organizations asked included the Botetourt County Historical Society, the Botetourt County Genealogy Club, Historic Fincastle, Inc., the Botetourt Artillery, the County Wide League, the Botetourt County School Board, and the Botetourt County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office, among others.

Cody Sexton, Assistant to the County Administrator, and Clinton are serving as advisors to the committee.

The Board approved the committee’s makeup. No timeline for decisions as to any action regarding the monument at the Courthouse was given.
