Program for Students with Disabilities Launches at DSLCC This Fall

Dabney S. Lancaster Community College is launching an “Inclusive Learning Enabled Action Program” (ILEAP) this fall for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, allowing participants to enroll in classes on DSLCC’s Clifton Forge campus. The announcement was made recently by Dr. Benjamin Worth, DSLCC Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Julie A. Baker, who has had an extensive career in public education, including more than 33 years of providing specialized programming for individuals with developmental disabilities, will serve as the ILEAP Developer.

ILEAP reinforces personal effectiveness skills while gaining occupational experience. It is a two-year intensive program – six semesters, including two summer terms — that includes opportunities to earn 27 credit hours of coursework in classes with general population students and will assist program students in successfully transitioning into gainful employment.

The US Department of Education has granted DSLCC approval to operate ILEAP as a Comprehensive Transition Postsecondary Program. This means that participants who have earned a high school diploma other than a standard diploma are eligible to receive financial aid.

ILEAP participants must be able to work independently and navigate a college campus unassisted. Functional literacy – basically fourth-grade ready level or higher – is also required.

Baker was an active community member serving on the Advisory Board during development of the ILEAP.  As the developer, she will be overseeing and implementing the program.  She is committed to assisting DSLCC students who qualify for this program with workforce development skills and experiences which will ultimately lead to gainful employment, says Dr. Worth.

“I am so excited to be provided with this opportunity to apply my skills and experiences in this postsecondary setting,” says Baker.  “The ILEAP provides a comprehensive approach to workforce development with an emphasis on the development of foundational skills necessary for college and workplace success. This is a unique opportunity for program participants to enroll in meaningful occupational and technical experiences. I am honored to be selected to support this innovative program at DSLCC.”
