(UPDATED 1-29-21) * ROUTE 220 SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS IN EAGLE ROCK – The project is underway. Flagging operations will be in place on Route 220, north and southbound lanes between Eagle Rock and Iron Gate, 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., seven days per week. 24-hour flagging operations may be in place periodically. Speed limit is reduced to 45 mph throughout the project and 35 miles per hour just south of Route 622 (Prices Bluff Road) and just north of Route 722 (Chatham Road). No wide loads are permitted through the area. Drivers are cautioned to slow down and pay close attention through the work zone due to curves and minimal site distance. Drivers should watch for signs. Work is estimated to be completed fall 2021.
· TRAFFIC SHIFT/INTERSECTION CLOSURE
o Beginning the first week of February, traffic on Route 220 (Botetourt Road) will be switched to a new roadway alignment. The traffic switch will take place between the bridge over Sinking Creek, approximately 0.4 mi south of Route 622 (Prices Bluff Road), and the curve south of the newly constructed retaining wall, approximately 0.2 mi north of Route 722 (Chatham Road South).
When the traffic switch is completed, the intersection at Route 722 (Chatham Road South) and Route 220 (Botetourt Road) will be closed in order to connect a new intersection with the new roadway alignment. A detour with signage will be in place for Chatham Road residents and services using the Route 722 (Chatham Road North) intersection with Route 220, located approximately 1.5 miles north of the south intersection. Message boards will be set up to alert drivers. This intersection will be closed and detoured from February 4 and work will continue until completed unless impacted by weather, except on Sunday through not later than February 9. After the new intersection opens, the detour will be removed.
· FLAGGING OPERATIONS:
o A 24-hour one lane flagger operation will be in place periodically from Route 43 (Narrow Passage Road) to Route 694 (Gala Loop South) until further notice.
o A 24-hour one lane flagger operation may be in place periodically in January from Route 622N (Gala Loop) to Route 696 (Buhrman Road).
o A 24-hour one lane flagger operation will be in place January 11-15, from Route 694N (Gala Loop) to Route 722 (Chatman Road).
