250th Anniversary features Genealogy Fair and History Fair

Much history and genealogy in Botetourt County is found in local cemetaries like Godwin Cememtary in Fincastle.

The 250th anniversary of Botetourt is rapidly approaching. In connection with that event, The Botetourt Genealogy Club recently changed the name of the event we are hosting to The Botetourt Genealogy and History Fair.

We feel the new  focus on history would be more interesting and we will now feature as much local history as possible from countywide communities. We realize not everyone has an interest in genealogy, but that many share our love of history. We are especially interested in the forgotten historic communities such as Glen Wilton, Cloverdale and Iron Gate. We also are encouraging residents of Eagle Rock and Buchanan to participate as we currently have no representation from those areas.

We feel that to make the Fair a success we need as much information as possible from all areas of the county. We are asking for any old photographs, artifacts, clothing, farm implements or household items to be shared at the Fair. If you would be willing to share this information please contact event organizer, Greg Rieley at Gregrieley1@gmail.com.

The Botetourt County Sheriff’s Department will be providing extra security to protect your artifacts. We hope that the change in the name of the Fair will bring families and communities together for this historic event. The Botetourt Genealogy and History Fair will be held at Breckinridge Elementary School Thursday July 9 through Sunday July 12, 2020.
