Fallen Heroes Memorial Tree at Buchanan Volunteer Fire Dept recalls sacrifice and honor

Fallen Heroes Tree

The Buchanan Volunteer Fire Dept started this tree 4 years ago to honor and respect those 1st responders killed in the Line of Duty, as well as to let their families know that they are remembered. Bill Price who puts the tree up yearly said, “This is the 1st year I have a star on the tree of a friend of mine, a firefighter who started on the job with me years ago. ”

As you look at the stars, the front has their name and for the police, end of watch date (date which they were killed), for fire, last alarm date (date which they were killed). For K-9, there is a paw print on front. For those who lost their battle with 9-11 cancer in 2019, 9-11 is written on the front. On the back is the department they worked for and their state. Totals for this years stars are 142 blue – out of those are 23- K9 dogs, and 9 -police officers who lost their battle with 9/11 related cancer in 2019 , red stars total 72, of which 17 are fitefighters who lost their battle as well with 9/11 cancer.

Once lit, the tree will remain lit until Jan 1st. We then start on next years tree, as it then will become the 2020 Fallen Heroes Tree.
