Basketball Team Roster Announced, Season Begins November 2
Dabney S. Lancaster Community College’s Men’s Basketball Coach Brandon Garrett has announced the team roster for the 2019-20 season, which begins Saturday, November 2, with an away game at Mid-Atlantic Christian University in Elizabeth City, NC, followed by a second game on Sunday, November 3, against Johnston Community College in Smithfield, NC.
The first two home games for the DSLCC Roadrunners, to be held in the Armory on the DSLCC Clifton Forge campus, are scheduled on Friday, November 15, against Bryant and Stratton (OH) College at 8 pm, and Saturday, November 16, at 2 pm, playing The Crown College from Powell, TN.
“I am very excited about this opportunity for not only DSLCC but the community as a whole,” says Garrett. “I think this has been something that the area has not only wanted but needed for many years. I am excited that DSLCC President Dr. (John) Rainone and his staff decided to bring on the sport. I think this is a tremendous opportunity. Thus far, I have been pleased with our progress as a team. We still have a lot of work to do, and that will continue throughout the season, but I feel like we are on the right track.”
Garrett says that the players are eager to start the season. “The first home game on November 15 will be huge for us,” he adds. “I would like to send a personal invitation on behalf of the program to all DSLCC students and people in the community to come out and support us.”
Seven of the 17-men roster hail from the Alleghany Highlands, three are from Charlottesville, and three are from West Virginia. The remainder come to DSLCC from Richmond, Lynchburg, Buena Vista and Fincastle. Five are second-year students, the rest are freshmen.
“I believe this is an exciting addition to our community,” says
Carl “Shorty” Wolfe, III, who is serving as interim athletic director. “It
gives our graduating [high school] athletes another option to consider when
thinking about furthering their education and athletic career – whether they
were overlooked by the bigger basketball programs or would like to just
continue to compete, sharpen their skills and save some money on their
education before continuing onto a four year school.”
“We here at DSLCC are excited, motivated and dedicated to building an athletics
program, and we have high hopes of adding some other sports in the future,” he
adds. “It will take some considerable support from our community to achieve
these goals. whether it’s by donating time, by volunteering at our games or
donating financially. We have a dedicated staff here at DSLCC who have
put in a lot of time and effort to make this possible. Please come out
and support your Roadrunners!”
Ticket prices for home games will be $5 per person for general admission. Children under the age of 5 years old are free. Active Military, veterans and senior citizens get in for $3 per person. Families of four or more pay no more than $20 and all DSLCC Students get in FREE with their DSLCC Student ID.
