BCPS convocation featured speakers and enthusiasm

BCPS Convocation for teachers was held this morning Aug. 2, at Bonsack Baptist Community Life Center.

Following a school roll call, the event got under way about 8:30 a.m.

The school division was represented for a welcome by School Board Chairman Michael Beahm, who remarked, “This will be my first and last.” He retires from the board as of Dec. 31

Gary Larrowe, County Administrator addressed the assembly of teachers. His basic message, “We are on a growth trend here in Botetourt.” He commended the teachers for being entrusted with the students and for creating opportunities for youth.

Dr. Lisa Chen in her first year at BCPS was full of enthusiasm and goals. This will no longer be just an 8- 3:30 job. “We have much to do to be a world class, global school division. All children can and will learn.” She brought laughter with many of her quips including a story of her Taiwanese immigrant parents, who advise her when she does not know to “Google it.” Her message was team effort, leadership and engagement of students.

After a short break, world renowned author and innovator, Charles “Chic” Thompson of the Darden School at UVA hit the stage. He immediately engaged the teachers in exercises on creative thinking. “How would you use the box a refrigerator came in when you were five years old?” That was the first exercise of many.

Here is some info on Thompson from an earlier release by Botetourt County.

“Chic Thompson is an internationally renowned speaker and author on creativity. He has worked extensively for global corporations, including UTC, McGraw-Hill, Accenture, and the Young Presidents Organization. He has also worked with such U.S. government agencies as the CIA, the FBI, and NASA, and has helped schools develop stronger creative thinking skills.”
