Cloverdale Elementary students participated in Roanoke Mini Maker Faire at the Science Museum

Hannah, a student at Cloverdale Elementary School, made a Hedgehog out of a book at the Mini Maker Faire.

Hannah and Kyler, Paitin and Lily were among those who participated; all are Cloverdale Elementary students who explored the wonders in the Mini Maker Faire on Sunday Feb. 17 at the Science Museum of Western VA.
Nine first and second graders from the Botetourt school took part in the activity.

Led by school librarian Mary Boardwine, the students had brought two challenges to the Faire. The challenges were the tree house and music makers. Boardwine said, “The students have practiced these at school. Here, they can try our challenges as well as many others here in the Science Museum.”

The first allowed the younger children to build accessories of a tree house . The second allowed the older children to design music instruments using conductors, circuits and patterns. The conductors were types of fruit– bananas, lemons, limes and and assortment of candy, like twizzlers and Swedish fish. ( We have a video on our FB page: The Botetourt Bee)

The four houses, used at CES, not unlike Harry Potter, were happily represented by t-shirts on the kids. Said principal Jessica Martin, ” Every student, staff and faculty belong to one of the four houses their entire elementary career. They get points of making good choices and kindness for instance. We mass points all year. Whomever has the most points gets a school trophy at the end of the school year.”

The Maker Faire was lively and attended by hundreds over the course of four hours.
