JRHS Day of Service rocked!
James River High School’s Day of Service on Friday, Sept. 21 was comprised of over 330 students and 50 adults. It is estimated that 1650 hours of volunteer service took place in that one day! From moving mulch to manure, painting and clearing were among the high notes of the volunteer service. Organized by Zach Wakeman the Ag teacher and FFA sponsor, the school embraced the day. He said, “It is our chance to give back to the community that supports us.”
School buses loaded with students dressed in red t-shirts went to numerous sites in the Fincastle, Buchanan and Eagle Rock areas. The sites included schools, non- profits and churches as well as a town cemetery and park. At New Freedom Farm for instance, farm volunteer and JRHS student Catherine Amos had laid out the schedule of tasks to be completed. Director Lois Fritz explained the farm’s purpose, (See video here) and the students set to work moving and clearing manure, setting up tables, easy-ups and many other jobs.
The scene of helpers recreated across the James River school zone all day long at the various sites.
It was the second year for the event. JRHS principal Jamie Talbott said, “This is a very big deal. We are so proud of the student and staff participation.”
Awesome, Knights!
