Roaring Run great place for a family hike
Roaring Run is located in North Botetourt and worth the effort to visit with the family. To get there take US 220 Botetourt Road via Craig Creek Road and follow the sign. The US Forest Service park features a 3/4 mile hike to beautiful falls on an easily negotiable trail. The trail also can be used to access a longer trail of a 9 mile hike called the “Hoop Hole Trail.” For families, the hike to the falls is almost perfect, however.
Be sure to take good sturdy shoes and yes, a bathing suit for the water at the bottom of the falls if so desired. But please note it is swim at your own risk.
There are plenty of bridges, beautiful rock formations and yes even the bunny rabbit-like tree featured here in a photo. The creek does roar, so it is aptly named. Recent rains have filled the creek which is unusual for August. A number of water falls occur throughout the trek but the top of the trail features two beautiful falls. The second is reached by a series of steep steps, so the unconditioned hiker may stay at the lower falls if need be.
Because it is a mountain stream, the water temperature at Roaring Run is approximately 52 degrees. Therefore, trout are also part of the stream. Armed with a fishing pole and a license, a day can include fishing for trout. Cool spots along the trail are welcome and on hot days, there is no rush in the hike!
A furnace used in the 1800s to make iron is a feature of the park. Slag, the by-product of the furnace can be found along the trail nearby the furnace. Iron ore was mined in Botetourt County for most of the 19th century and early 20th century. So a bit of history awaits the visitor.
The day can be most complete by a picnic at one of the many sites at the foot of the trail and grills for charcoal are available as well. A Subway is located on the way to the area on US 220 just south of Eagle Rock and a convenience store is part of the deal if you forgot to pack the picnic. Secure trash bins are also part of the area near the trail head. Plenty of parking is available.
In summary, this summer and fall be sure to try the hiking trail at Roaring Run. For certain, bring sturdy shoes, water for drinking and a walking stick for a fun family day!
