LB Girls’ Basketball Alumnae Night on December 22nd.
Next Monday, December 22nd, Lord Botetourt will host a LB Girls’ Basketball Alumnae Night. The event will coincide with this week’s games vs. Blackburg. (JV 4:30, Varsity 6:00). Big plans have been made to celebrate one of the most decorated Lord Botetourt Sports teams, with 5 State Championships.
The ball started rolling with the efforts of Rodney Spickard, LB sports superfan. Spikard has been a fan since he graduated from LB in 1987 and thought the team deserved recognition for their championships and dominant history. “Probably two or three months ago, I started thinking about the five state titles the girls’ team has won, and they’ve been dominant for just so long […] They’ve had 33, I believe, straight winning seasons. Being here in a community and being a fan of Lord Botetourt sports in general, I just thought they deserved some recognition for the success that they’ve had on the court for this long,” said Spikard.
Spikard was granted access to the school’s library and archival yearbooks for research.
With help from Coach Renee Favaro and former Coach Chuck Pound, Spikard compiled several documents highlighting the history, accolades, and players who continued to collegiate level sports.
Alumnae will get a complimentary ticket for themselves plus one guest and will be recognized on court at halftime. There will also be a hospitality room and other post-game celebrations. There are plans for a broadcast to interview some of the former coaches and players before the game on Facebook Live, on Gary Crawford’s page.
Everyone involved hopes the house is packed for the event to cheer on the Cavaliers and pay tribute to the team’s winning lineage.
Coach Favaro has been part of the program for 20 years, four as a player and sixteen as a coach. Coach Favaro said, “What sets this program apart is the culture. Being part of this legendary program is a privilege, and working hard is the price of admission. The hard work and how we represent Botetourt will always come at the forefront of our culture. Win or lose, playing hard, playing disciplined, and playing together is what opponents and fans will continue to see from this program.”
