Buchanan selects new Town Manager, Timothy J. Mack

At a special meeting on Monday, September 15th, the Town Council unanimously approved an employment agreement with Mr. Mack, who currently serves as the director of community development and planning for the town of Siler City, North Carolina.
Mr. Mack earned a Master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning from Virginia Tech and holds an accreditation from the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP). He has previously worked for Franklin County, VA, Rockingham County, NC, and Buena Vista, VA.
Mr. Mack said, “I’m as excited as I am honored to have this opportunity. Buchanan is a very special place with deep community ties, strong local businesses, and a burgeoning recreation economy. The people who live here want to be here, and they are passionate about the long-term health, stability, and direction of the Town. From day one, my chief goal is to build trust among our citizens and forge a strong, productive relationship with the Town Council that equally reflects its confidence in me. I look forward to getting to know the staff and community and immersing myself in all things Buchanan!”
Buchanan Mayor Sue Way said, “We are excited to welcome Tim Mack to the Town of Buchanan. Tim is a dynamic professional who is passionate about community building and brings valuable knowledge, skills, and experience in local community development and planning to the Town Manager position. The Council was particularly impressed with Tim’s success in obtaining and managing grants and using acquired grant funds to implement transformative local projects. Council was also excited about his collaborative management style and passion for active and authentic community engagement. We are confident that Tim will be a valuable asset to the Town of Buchanan, and we are looking forward to him assuming his duties.”
The Council also expressed its sincere appreciation for the professional services of Jon Ellestad, who has provided valuable support as interim town manager for the past several months and will continue to serve in that role until Mr. Mack assumes his official duties on October 14th. Jon Ellestad took the position of interim town manager after Angela Lawrence resigned after less than a year as the previous town manager, citing “a number of factors have made it clear that my ability to professionally manage this town as a council-manager form of government will continue to be impeded.”
