Ironman 70.3 this weekend in Roanoke and Botetourt
Race weekend activities for the 2022 Carilion Clinic IRONMAN 70.3 Virginia’s Blue Ridge triathlon will officially begin on Friday, June 3rd and Saturday, June 4th with athlete check-in at River’s Edge Park- North next to Reserve Avenue. On Sunday, June 6th, athletes will begin their IRONMAN 70.3-mile journey.
Race Overview:
The 2022 Carilion Clinic IRONMAN 70.3 Virginia’s Blue Ridge triathlon leads athletes along a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride and 13.1-mile run through Roanoke and the surrounding region. The swim will take place in Carvins Cove Reservoir. Once out of the water, athletes will take on the 56-mile bike course surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains. Athletes will depart from Carvins Cove Reservoir and continue north into beautiful Botetourt County toward the Town of Buchanan. It is the starting point for an epic four-mile climb on Route 43 to the Blue Ridge Parkway entrance. Athletes will experience breathtaking views as they ride and descend 21-miles of a completely closed scenic byway to the Town of Vinton at Route 24. The ride will connect through Downtown Roanoke and end at River’s Edge Park-North on Reserve Avenue. Athletes will close out their 70.3-mile journey when they take on a 13.1-mile run. The run course follows the paved Roanoke River Greenway along the Roanoke River. The finish is back at River’s Edge Park-North.
