The Botetourt Board of Supervisors approved a resolution in support of the people of Ukraine. The resolution denounced “the needless, illegal, and inhumane invasion of Ukraine by Russia and its President, Vladimir Putin, in the strongest possible terms.” Additionally, the Board acknowledged “its support for the people of Ukraine as they continue to defend their country from this illegal and inhumane invasion.”
Supervisor Chairman Richard Bailey allowed Danny Goad, a Cloverdale resident, to speak outside of the public comment section to address the resolution. He asked the Supervisors not to support the resolution. Goad said the resolution would start World War III and alleged that there was no evidence of civilian deaths in Ukraine or that Ukraine had not started the conflict.
Supervisors Steve Clinton and Billy Martin both took issue with Goad’s comments, noting their own military service as well as continuing media coverage of the military action that showed civilian casualties. After discussion the motion in support of the people of Ukraine passed unanimously.
