Interactive Passenger Safety Program to visit Central Academy Middle School

Salem, Va – Youth Of Virginia Speak Out About Traffic Safety’s (YOVASO) “ScanEd: Physics of a Crash” Program visited Central Academy Middle School on April 24 in partnership with Virginia State Police (VSP).

From 8:35 a.m. – 1:50 p.m., students participated in this hands-on experience which includes a wrecked vehicle set up on site and QR codes affixed to it and various items surrounding the vehicle (such as a cell phone, seat belt, steering wheel, etc.). Students then used popular iPad and QR code technology to view educational and engaging videos depicting real-life consequences as a result of unsafe driving and unsafe passenger behaviors.

“ScanEd is a unique way to teach youth and teens about the consequences of risky driving and passenger behaviors,” said Casey Taylor, Program Development Coordinator for YOVASO. “It creates a unique environment for students to talk with each other and law enforcement about driver and passenger safety.”

State Farm® provides grant funding for the “ScanEd” Program. “Motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of death among teens in the U.S.,” said Kate Beadle, spokesperson for State Farm. “State Farm is strongly committed to doing everything we can to reduce teen crashes and help save lives.”

Preliminary data indicates 71 teens were killed in motor vehicle crashes in Virginia last year. With the high-risk warm weather months approaching YOVASO’s goal is to encourage teens to drive safely and more responsibly, and to prevent traffic fatalities.
