#1 New Freedom Farm. In local and national news this summer and fall, the terrific work being done for veterans and rescue horses is a great example of what being good and helpful to each other is all about. Lois Fritz the leader of NFF and others have done the extraordinary work it takes to help stop the 22 suicides per day in PTSD with veterans of wars. Not only that, she opens the doors to the community. On Thanksgiving anyone with no place to enjoy a meal come to the barn. Each year the number has grown
Among help she received this year are numerous volunteers, Biker Groups associated with veterans, JRHS Day of service students, Home Depot and many others. NFF also honors first responders. Veterans from modern day conflict like Iraq and Afghanistan through to WWII veterans are part of the impact group. Check out the New Freedom Farm Facebook for info on how to donate.
#2 Colonial Elementary is a Blue Ribbon School. A National honor only bestowed on the best schools in the country by the US Department of Education. The school board honored the faculty in the December school board meeting. A great accomplishment for Botetourt County Public Schools to have a Colonial Elementary in its midst.
#3 Troutville became a Blue Star Community with a grand celebration on Nov. 11 in the Troutville Town Park. Once again, to honor veterans after WWII and beyond, road markers throughout the United States celebrate the veterans of this nation with roadside markers and at nearby landmarks. The sense of pride and dedication of those who serve is a testament to true American spirit.
